Are there Horse Trails in the GSMNP?
Yes, there are, as of 2024, more than 500 MILES of trail that is officially accessible for riding horses within the National Park boundaries. Off-trail or cross-country riding is prohibited within the National Park boundaries, but with over 500 miles of trail, interested parties and their equine partners will not be lefting wanting. There are 5 drive-in horse camps with backcountry trail access: Cades Cove in Townsend, TN, Big Creek in Waynesville, NC, Cataloochee in Waynesville, NC, Round Bottom in Cherokee, NC, and Towstring in Cherokee, NC. They are generally open from April to October each year when the chances of freezing temperatures and snow are the least throughout the year.
What are the rules of riding in the GSMNP?
As stated above, do not bring your horse to ride on unofficial trails, off-trail or cross-country riding. You may be required to to carry a copy of the park’s horse trail map to prevent getting lost as well as additional information on riding a horse in the GSMNP. Designated campsites are located on some trails and are encouraged to check reservations and availability in advance. Other general considerations like cleaning up after your horses may be required as well.
Can I stall my horse in the Smoky Mountain area per day?
The five horse camps listed above allow and encourage you to board your horse in their facilities when camping overnight or whenever you need to keep your horse somewhere for any reason. All five generally also have horse trailer parking access as well.
What Is A Farrier? I’ve Never Heard Of One Before…
As we list on our home page, Stay And Stall have an on-site farrier. A farrier is someone who specializes in caring for horse hooves. Farriers install horseshoes to horses, trim their hooves and provide limited or full veterinarian-style additional care as needed. If you are bringing a horse to East Tennessee, you can be confident needs for your horse’s hooves will be in good care here.

The Smoky Mountains and Sevier County area have a handful of horse ranches and enough horse owners in the area so that having food, medicine, toys and other things that will keep your horse healthy and happy.
